About apprenticeship vacancies in the UK

Apprenticeships are available in a huge range of careers. Trade apprenticeships include electrician, plumber, carpenter, bricklayer and motor vehicle technician. You can also train in health and social care, business administration, accounting, customer service, hospitality, IT and software development, digital marketing, engineering, manufacturing and many more fields.

Apprenticeships come at different levels. Intermediate (level 2) and advanced (level 3) apprenticeships are similar to GCSEs and A levels. Higher apprenticeships (levels 4 and 5) and degree apprenticeships (levels 6 and 7) lead to qualifications up to a full bachelor's or master's degree, paid for by the employer and government. They last from just over a year to several years depending on the level and subject.

Anyone aged 16 or over who lives in England and is not in full time education can apply, and there is no upper age limit, so apprenticeships suit career changers too. Similar schemes run in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Apprentices are entitled to the apprentice rate of the National Minimum Wage at least, although many employers pay more, as well as paid holiday and time for training.

When applying, show genuine interest in the career you want to train for. Mention any related school subjects, hobbies or projects, and explain why you prefer learning on the job. Employers know apprentices are at the start of their careers, so enthusiasm, reliability and a willingness to learn often matter more than grades.
